Caribou

5 Comments Experimental

I’m getting more and more impressed these days by Canadian producer/artist Dan Snaith a.k.a. Caribou. I think it’s the diversity in his music that I appreciate so much because every time I check a new Caribou track, it seems to be able to take me by surprise. In the end,  isn’t that one of the main things we expect from music..  isn’t it “supposed” to be fresh, innovative and inspiring? Well.. those are exactly the elements that Caribou is able to put into his music! Moreover, his eclectic live shows are known  for the use of simultaneous drummers and a synchronized visual live band, so live he also tries to transfer his vibe to the crowd… Try to describe the genre I hear you ask? Well I tried that but it’s hard. I think the definition given by Washington Post journalist David Malitz would fit quite ok here: “a combination of kaleidoscopic, psychedelic pop explorations with a more electronic, beat-driven sound that’s as much about getting feet moving as heads spinning”. A couple of weeks back, Caribou did a remix of Four Tet’s Angel Echoes. Adding some bass and glitches this is only an echo of the original and  it’s also a perfect example of how Caribou’s music is able to take you on a musical exploration trip. Check it!

Four Tet – Angel Echoes (Caribou remix)

Caribou is currently doing a fall tour in Europe together with the likes of Four Tet, James Holden, Nathan Fake, Junip, Beach House and others.. Be sure to quickly check out the tour dates, because  a lot of giggs are already sold out (e.g. Brussels, nov 27).

Four Tet is going on tour in April to support the release of his massively anticipated 5th un-studio album ‘There Is Love’. Kieran has been a busy, busy, busy man; I wonder where he get’s the time to inhale and exhale like normal people? Here is an interview where he explains some of the idea’s he had for the mix he did live at BBC radio one.

In the interview, Kieran reveals that he’s collaborating with Floating points on a remix and I’m really excited to hear what they’ve done. If you haven’t heard of Floating Points before now, do yourself a favor and check out some of his tunes. The BBC mix has been uploaded to the Four Tet soundcloud page but you can also alternatively stream or download it right here.

The other mix he made was done for Plastic People – a final commemorative compilation of tracks that celebrate the experiences he’s had as a resident DJ at the club. Included in the mix are the stunning recent singles ‘Love Cry,’ ‘Moth’, ‘Sing’, the Joy Orbison mix, as well as an exclusive unheard track off the new album. This mix is also available on the Four Tet soundcloud page but again, we’ve included it right here for your convenience.

As far as I’m concerned, ‘There Is Love’ marks the first must have album of 2010. I’m a bit gutted that there isn’t a tour date for Toronto but maybe I can make it down to New York if the stars align properly. ‘There Is Love’ will be out January 26th through Domino records. Hopefully some of our readers living in major cities will have the opportunity to catch Four Tet on tour with support from Nathan Fake. If you’re planning on attending we’d like to know! Here are the dates.

02.17 New York, NY – Le Poisson Rouge
02.18 Cambridge, MA – Middle East Downstairs
02.19 Chicago, IL – Empty Bottle

A highly anticipated collaboration for fans of Burial & Fourtet. Here we have 2 tracks with no trace of any conventional glossy fancy packaging or album artwork. It’s not as if it’s a big statement or anything, but I do like the sort of raw, elusive, and bare aesthetic. You can see in these pictures that the catalog number was etched right on the vinyl.

Wolf club revisits the strange hypnotic rhythmic trademark Burial introduced on his first EP – “South London Burroughs” while Moth is very serene and more subtle, but the ambiance is what makes it so gutting and irresistible.
